Abhorsen Comments

Ostensibly these books are for Young Adults, but don't let the age restriction deter you. This is one of the best fantasy tales out there. As a bonus, the books are not monstrously big like many of the fantasy books these days. This is a good thing. Many fantasy books meander into nowhereland; Nix, however, is a phenomenal writer, able to fully harness the power of the English language. The Abhorson trilogy is a mix of fantasy and horror. If you want some fantasy that gives you the chills while delivering a rousing, action packed tale, you won't go wrong with Abhorson. Buy the book, curl up on your favorite sofa, dim the lights, and be prepared for a chilling fantasy tale.

I can agree to most of the comments, although in my opinion Abhorsen, the third book, is the best one of the entire series. I don't know if any of you who have read these books ever thought about Mogget, but I was completely taken by what he turned out to be and how he influenced the ending of the third book.
I cannot say more than highly recommend these books to you - if you want to discover something new, something that is not really familiar to "normal" fantasy.

Subject: Audio Version

To say that the narrator of the audio book version of the trilogy undersells the point. Its Tim Curry, one of the premier voice actors on this planet.

I really enjoyed these. The characters are complex and interesting, the world is unique, and Nix is an excellent writer.

You will not be disappointed.

Thr abhorsen trilogy deserves a better rank than 21....it is a relativley light read compared to martin or tolkien but it has a nix has a wonderful style of writing. i would rate it pretty high on my favourites list.

Subject: Not for Kids

This is truly a fantastic world created by Nix- magic is unique, there is the element of horror with the undead (part of what made Raymond E. Feist's "Silverthorn" so good), the juxtaposition of a magical world bordering one like our own early 20th century is also cool. Nix has stated that for some reason booksellers (I think here in the States, initially) started placing this series on the childrens/YA shelves even though they were not meant to go there. I know he's written other stuff for younger readers which may be why this happened.
Anyway, many of the entries here have a lot in common- what differentiates them is how soft or hard they may be- how gritty, so to speak- along with the quality of the writing. The Abhorsen Trilogy is something that is very unique, in a class all its own- never read anything like it (the other such entry here, I feel, is McKillip's "Riddlemaster" series which is perhaps the loveliest fantasy series I've ever read).

I must agree! This series really first brought me to my love of fantasy books! It's well written and not your typical kids book. Garth Nix is an amazing writer. I recommend you read all of his books!

Subject: My favorite books of all time

I read Sabriel when I had probably just hit my teens. I have never loved a series more. I was so blown away by these books I wrote to Garth Nix, and fell in love with fantasy as a genre forever. I am in my mid-twenties now, and re-read these books regularly, loving them every time.

If this series was an apple-pie, I would down it with such voracity you'd think me a barbarian. Garth Nix is definitely one of those authors whom shall forever remain in my heart and undivided support. His writing is rich and raw and can bring about emotions in the heart's of his reader's, simply because it is filled with such reality. While reading you totally forget it is just black ink on plus-minus four-hundred and fifty sheets of parchment - you become the characters.
Bloody brilliant!

This books are some of the best fantasy books out there! if you like them try George r.r martins books, or R.A. Salvatore books.

I think that these books are the best i've ever read, and i love fantasy books alot. i'm in the middle of writing my third fantasy book and these books have really helped me with my current novel. I love Sabriel and find you instantly fall inlove with the character, i did find that in Lireal at the start i didnt want to read it because i didnt like the character as much but i found myself totally engrossed in her character by the end, though i didnt think sam was that wonderful and Ellimere, was just annoying and i though that Sabriel wouldnt have such a mean daughter. Still I really liked Lireal and I loved the last book almost as much as the first, espically the disreputable dog, i was so sad when she died. I would definuitly reccomend these books and i definuitly know what you mean by there being alot of quite bad fantasy books out there, which makes me quite pesimistic when it comes to choosing one to read. These books are great though, sorry for rambeling on.

I agree with both comments. These books introduced me to the fantasy fiction genre at 40! Sabriel is the best of the three books but third book is also very good. There are some excellent (and different from the norm) characters in it which make the books interesting and fun.

Sabriel is my favorite book. The trilogy is all right, the two sequels Lireal and Abhorsen, is not as good as the first book; the characters are not as likeable. But you must give the first book a try! Highly Recommended =D
