Deathgate Cycle Comments

Deathgate Cycle (Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman)

"

I am no big fan of D&D-type literature, and Weis and Hickman expend a lot of energy writing those type of books. However, this massive epic fantasy saga is wholly original. It's massive, ambitious, and well worth the read. I gleefully lost myself for a few weeks in this very addicting saga. If you like the hero-driven, magic-riddled worlds of Robert Jordan, and Raymond E. Fiest, then you will probably love the Deathgate Cycle saga.

While magic isn't as subtle in this series as what I would usually prefer(not really into D&D stuff), I love it because it's very character-driven and the plot is quite original. The main character, who, thankfully, isn't all about brawn, doesn't come off right away as the good guy and it's unknown right off the bat who the main villain/villains are. The characters are all very believable and while most will grow and go through complete transformation in ideals, they stay true to their characters. I was a little sad to part ways with them when I completed the series.

There are seven books to the Deathgate Cycle but the first 4 books read almost like standalone novels as different worlds are being explored and the 3 last books tie everything nicely together. I have to admit that the first book, Dragon Wing, can feel a little slow(especially once you hit the part where you're introduced to the Gegs(dwarfs), but bear past that little part and the series becomes incredibly addicting and difficult to put down.

I did first read these books when I was about 16/17 so that does say something about the writing. It is more focused and doesn't stray, making the series breezier to read than other adult works but that's not really a bad thing. The books were still nicely written and consistent. I would recommend them to anyone, especially if they're looking for something a little different.

The Dragonlance series written by these authors got me into reading when I was 12. I loved that series so much that I immediately bought the deathgate cycle series. I loved them just as much. Like another poster wrote, the series does get a lot better the further you get into it.

As an adult however I began to reread the series six months ago and I couldn't get past the third book. This series is written for 12- 18 year olds. Its a shame because I had such fond memories.

The first book was good... maybe the second... its hard to remember, I read them as they came out. The rest were horrible. Weis & Hickman's DarkSword trilogy was infinitely better.

I have to say this is one of my fauvoirite bookseries ever. I have to admit though that the first book is worst of them , which sucks because a lot of people don't want to keep on reading the next one after it. But if you make it to the 3rd book you won't be able to drop the book anymore.

Rarely you see such a good character developement in any fantasy books. Moust of the time characters stay as they started. but in this series the actions of the characters actually affect the personalities of their characters.

So bear the first book and you will be clad that you read the rest of them.

And don't be fooled or put off at first by things like "Gegs" and other weird words. If you know Weis and Hickman you know they are about D&D and you then should know as a fantasy fan that smaller races such as dwarves and gnomes have gadgets so to speak. God that guy pisses me off. sorry lol.

Subject: Great series.

Well Obviously the person that wrote the comment before me did not give enough time for the story to develop. This is one of the greatest epic fantasy books, truly genius. The authors capture the human spirit so well, and they also build all of these wonderful metaphors for life and experiences. I love this series. IT took me a while to get into it.. maybe two chapters or so.. it doesn't grab you right away..but it does grab you and it holds on until the end.
