Furies of Calderon Comments
Furies of Calderon (Jim Butcher)
Classic fantasy done right. Good story, good plot, terrific action, and fantasy set in a Roman milieu (something unusual in fantasy). This book (and series) features one of the more interesting magic systems. Done by the author of the Dresden Files (which is a good recommendation on its own merit indeed). As a bonus, the entire 6 book series has been completed.

I absolutely love this series. I admit, the last book got a little boring but that could just be me. I loved all the characters and felt the characterization was done wonderfully. The different characters all had their own personality. I lived waiting to see what Tavi would come up with next. I actually like this book better than the Dresden files. I got through four books really enjoying but the combination of twilight and Anita Blake has really turned me off to anything vampire. I expect I'll get back into it next time I'm hankering for some Jim Butcher.
I am a huge fan of Jim butcher... When I found out about codex Alexa at the end of one of the Harry Dresden books, I could not put them down. He is a great writer, I wish there were more than 6 books. Tavi is the perfect hero. Harry Dresden is the best fiction character ever.
if you are 12 years old and looking for a fantasy novel to read then this may be for you.
The dialogue is cliched, the actions are completely implausible and the storyline is not intelligent in the least.
Being a big fan of roman times as well I was very disappointed in these novels. In the end i managed to slaughter my way through the first book, picked up the second book to give the series another try, gave up again because i couldnt stand the way it was written. A month later i gave it one more attempt and still could not shake the feeling that i was losing brain cells because of the quality of writing
To late Tempest your brain cells must already be gone
Tempest, your an idiot and you wouldn'tt know a good story if it hit you square in face.
i have to agree with some of the others that thing your full of *)#t. you want something that is different and when you get it, your brain farts on you and you can't see a good story if it laid it self out in front of you. i was somewhat new to Fantasy when i first picked this up, and since have read many, alot of the best there are, and i still come back to this series and read it over and over. I enjoyed the magic style that was implemented here, and the writer definately drew me into the main character and his friends. is twelve when you started to read, is that why you referenced that year because i think a normal twelve year old might enjoy this. anyway, at least i have my b.s. detector, i should look up your posts and criticisms and read whatever you hate. 8)
I have to agree with the others on this one, The codex alera series is a great read. A few of my friends and I end up reading/finishing the butcher books within a couple days of their release. The characters are well developed and easy to fall in love with & his writing style is very easy to read
I'm a big fan of Butcher, and I have to even go out on a limb here to say that I enjoyed the codex alera books even more then the dresden books, though the dresden series is really coming to a boil with the last couple of books.
The magic system in this series is very nice as well. I hope Butcher decides to continue the series even though it seems to be completed (for now).
I wouldn't be shy to recommend this series to anyone.
Yes, I'm also surprised this didn't rate higher. These books are so enjoyable to read. It's got a lot of action, great characters, and, unlike a lot of other fantasy books, a sense of humor.
This was a great read and I would recommend it to anyone looking for an exciting new story. I would put it in the top 10 but I have not read every book out there. Also the whole 6 book series is finished so no waiting. A++
I would actually rate this higher than it currently is, I thought that the Aleron books by Jim Butcher were all absolutely fantastic. The pacing is great, you are nearly always on the edge of your seat. The story is engrossing, coherent and far reaching, spans 6 books and ends well.
Highly recommended.
Death its around every corner!!
great books they seem to flow one into the other seamlessly in a cool way. with multiple story lines weaving in and out in a very cohesive manor. But after the first 14 pages all of the characters seem about to die all the time. and say well this is it i am going to die. they never do, because they are the mane characters and you don't want them to die. it becomes like the first three stare wars. obi wan kenobi can't fall from a cliff to his death if Vader is going to kill him later. the comparison is not exact but you get what i mean. that being said. love the book and have read them multiple times and try to get others to read them.

Butcher rocks cant what for the next dresden.
